The US 2-Cent Coin: History, Design, and Fun Stories

The 2-cent coin holds a special but short place in US money history. It was made from 1864 to 1873. This coin was created during the Civil War to help with a shortage of small change. Today, coin collectors love it. This article explains the real facts about the US 2-cent coin, checked from trusted sources. We also add some interesting and fun stories.

Why the 2-Cent Coin Was Made

The US 2-cent coin started on April 22, 1864, by a new law. During the Civil War, people hoarded coins, so there were not enough small ones like 1-cent pieces. To fix this, the government made the 2-cent coin. It was made of bronze: 95% copper and 5% tin and zinc. This is similar to today’s pennies.

It was only produced for 10 years, from 1864 to 1873. In the first year (1864), about 19.8 million were made. By 1873, only 600 were produced. The coin is still legal money today, but no one uses it anymore.

The coin is about 23mm wide and weighs 6.22 grams. There are some variations. For example, the 1864 “Small Motto” version has smaller letters in “IN GOD WE TRUST.” These are rare and valuable to collectors.
